(Directed by Ingmar Bergman)
For a traditional production, you cannot do better than the 1975 production directed by Ingmar Bergman. Bergman films this in the small Drottningholm Theater in Stockholm and uses sets and special effects much as might have been used in Mozart’s time. The result is absolutely delightful and one of the great filmed opera performances.

If you just must have something now, The latest Magic Flute from the 2006 Salzburg Festival is conducted by Ricardo Muti with an excellent cast and is highly colorful sets with some Oriental inspired touches in the costumes. It even has the three boys arriving on stage in an airplane. Lots of fun.
