Lucia di Lammermoor and COVID-19:
At the direction of the City of Kansas City, Missouri and Mayor Quinton Lucas, Lyric Opera of Kansas City sadly announces that it will be unable to perform the last two performances of Lucia di Lammermoor on March 13 and 15, 2020 at the Kauffman Center. We ask that all ticket holders contact the Ticketing & Patron Services office before Friday, May 15 at 4:00 PM by emailing patronservices@kcopera.org or by calling (816) 471-7344 for further details or complete this form. Our ticketing staff is available to help 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday. If we do not hear from you by May 15, we will assume that you wish to donate your tickets to Lyric Opera, and we thank you for your generosity. Soprano Sarah Coburn returns to Lyric Opera in Lucia di Lammermoor, last seen here as Adina in The Elixir of Love (2003). Recent engagements include Rosina in The Barber of Seville and Juliette in Roméo et Juliette with Tulsa Opera; Marie in Daughter of the Regiment with Opera Carolina; Adèle in Le comte Ory and Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos at Seattle Opera; Konstanze in The Abduction from the Seraglio at Atlanta Opera; the title role in Manon with Opera Santa Barbara; the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor with Washington National Opera, Tulsa Opera and Utah Opera; Gilda in Rigoletto with Welsh National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Cincinnati Opera; and Giulietta in The Capulets and the Montagues with The Glimmerglass Festival.
Edgardo – Evan LeRoy Johnson *
Tenor Evan LeRoy Johnson debuts with Lyric Opera in Lucia di Lammermoor. Recent engagements include debuts as Cassio in Otello at Bayerische Staatsoper and at Oper Frankfurt as Don José in Carmen; Tamino in The Magic Flute at Chautauqua Institute; Rodolfo in La bohème and Narraboth in Salome at Opera Philadelphia; The Prince in Rusalka at Glyndebourne Festival and Des Moines Metro Opera; and Malcolm in Macbeth at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Other appearances include Steuermann in a concert performance of The Flying Dutchman with the Milwaukee Symphony, and soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with Columbus Symphony and in Britten’s War Requiem at Norwegian National Opera.
Enrico – Troy Cook
Baritone Troy Cook returns to Lyric Opera, most recently seen here as Father in Hansel and Gretel (2016). Recent engagements include debuts as Ford in Falstaff with Hamburgische Staatsoper and with Royal Opera Covent Garden as Guglielmo in Così fan tutte; Germont in La traviata at Central City Opera; Young Galileo in Galileo Galilei at Des Moines Metro Opera; Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at Opera Philadelphia and Florida Grand Opera; Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Washington National Opera and Utah Opera; Marcello in La bohème with Opera Philadelphia, Pittsburgh Opera and Syracuse Opera; and Father Palmer in Silent Night with Minnesota Opera, Atlanta Opera, and Austin Opera.
Raimondo – Adam Lau
Bass Adam Lau returns to Lyric Opera, last seen here as Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro (2016). Recent engagements include Creon in Medea at Wexford Festival; Basilio in The Barber of Seville with Kentucky Opera and North Carolina Opera; Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte with Opera Naples; The Speaker in The Magic Flute at Seattle Opera; Donner in Das Rheingold and the Old Hebrew in Samson et Dalila with North Carolina Opera. Concert appearances include Handel’s Messiah with Musica Sacra at Carnegie Hall; Mozart’s Requiem with the San Diego Symphony; Verdi’s Requiem with South Bend Symphony, and Haydn’s Creation with Symphony Silicon Valley.
Alisa – Kelly Birch
Kelly Birch returns to Lyric Opera after performing as a Resident Artist for the 2018-19 season. Recent appearances include Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music and Marcellina in The Marriage of Figaro at Aspen Music Festival. For Lyric Opera, she appeared as Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly; Miss Todd in The Old Maid and the Thief and Sally in A Hand of Bridge (both part of High Fidelity Opera); she was also seen in the title role of L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Mrs. Jones in Street Scene, and Alto Soloist in Beethoven’s Mass in C Major at Opera Varna (Bulgaria); and Rosmira in Partenope with OperaNEO.
Arturo – Joseph Leppek
Joseph Leppek is a 2019-20 Lyric Opera of Kansas City Resident Artist. Recent appearances for Lyric Opera include the Explorations Series concerts High Fidelity Opera and Mack the Knife is the Man I Love, as well as Glad Hand in West Side Story. He has also appeared as Tony in West Side Story with The Glimmerglass Festival; Mariachi 1 in The Summer King at Michigan Opera Theatre; Mr. Martini in the world premiere of It’s a Wonderful Life at Houston Grand Opera; Giachomo de Wisants in The Siege of Calais at The Glimmerglass Festival; and The Priest in Il Postino with Opera Saratoga.
Normanno – Kevin Thomas Smith
Kevin Thomas Smith returns to Lyric Opera, seen recently as tenor soloist in The Abduction from the Seraglio; in 2019-20, he also appears in the choruses of La bohème and The Shining. Smith is a doctoral student at the University of Kansas, where his credits include John James Box in Cox and Box; Flute in A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Don Basilio in Le nozze di Figaro; and Oronte in Handel’s Alcina, all with KU Opera. Other roles include Bushy in The Ballad of Baby Doe with Brevard Music Center, and the title role in Albert Herring with Music Academy International.
