Lyric Opera of Kansas City – Beth Ingram Administration Building
Tickets are $45, $40 for Lyric Opera subscribers and support group members

The Elixir Mixir, for fun-loving guests age 21+, will combine story elements from The Elixir of Love with the Thomas Hart Benton-inspired set design and our own local “elixirs”, creating a unique upscale pub-crawl experience.  The event begins at the administrative offices of Lyric Opera of Kansas City, where guests (and some special guests from The Elixir of Love cast) begin by getting a taste of the opera and its regional artist/Americana update.  Then, via shuttle bus, we’ll visit the Thomas Hart Benton Home and Studio for a guided tour followed by a wine tasting at Amigoni Urban Winery and a special “elixir” cocktail and appetizer at Affäre.  The shuttle will then bring guests back to the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.

The latest installment of Meet the Past with Crosby Kemper III spotlights two of the Midwest’s greatest artists, Kansas City’s Thomas Hart Benton and Iowan Grant Wood, painter of the iconic American Gothic.

Kemper, the Library’s director, holds a public conversation with Benton and Wood as respectively portrayed by veteran actor Robert Gibby Brand and the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival’s Matt Rapport. The event is co-presented by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City in conjunction with its production of The Elixir of Love later in March. Taking inspiration from Benton for its costumes, and from Wood for scenery, the Lyric resets Gaetano Donizetti’s sentimental comedy in early 20th-century America.

Major funding for Meet the Past is provided by the R.C. Kemper Jr. Charitable Trust, UMB Bank, n.a., Trustee. The presentation will be taped by KCPT-TV for later broadcast.
