Lyric Opera Express
Perform with the pros at your own school
Students in grades 2-6 perform for their school alongside professional opera singers in the opera, She Never Lost a Passenger. This opera tells the story of the extraordinary courage of Harriet Tubman and the precious human cargo she led north as “passengers” on the Underground Railroad. Children and professional singers perform together singing powerful, familiar tunes such as “Go Down, Moses”, “Follow the Drinking Gourd” and “Simple Gifts”. We travel with Harriet from the woods to a Quaker safe house on to freedom as documented by William Grant Still, a free man of color in Philadelphia, who chronicled their journeys. Our performances in schools celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City premier of this powerful and inspiring opera by Susan Kander.
Teachers receive educational materials to prep students for their operatic debuts – including music, a staging guide, and student activity packet. The Lyric Opera Express troupe arrives the day of the performance with the sets, props, and costumes for the dress rehearsal and final performance.
Up to 28 students may perform in each performance of She Never Lost a Passenger. The program is $595 for one performance, and $895 for two performances.
Has “Harriet” already come to your school? Check out our other offering, The Coyotes and the Rabbits. It’s a bilingual children’s opera based on three Mexican folk tales, sung in both English and Spanish.
