2025–2026 Season Gallery

The 2025–26 season was a historic year for Lyric Opera of Kansas City, as we celebrated the return to four full operas. In 2025, we honored the roots of our artform by presenting two pillars of Italian opera. In 2026, we selected works to help mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, honoring the voices, histories, and artistry that continue to shape our national story. As we wrap up for the season, take a moment to relive some of the most memorable moments from the last year.

The Shows

Our season began with a newly-built production of one of Rossini's Cinderella, followed by one of Puccini's great operatic masterpieces, Madame Butterfly. In the second half of our season, as a part of America's 250th anniversary, we paid homage with three productions that represented some of the most influential artists in American history: the Lyric's first-ever production of Porgy and Bess, a new touring production of Langston Hughes: A Lyrical Life, and a new co-production of Carlisle Floyd's operatic telling of the Steinbeck novella, Of Mice and Men. Relive the highlights by visiting the show galleries below.

Season Reactions

I absolutely love what [Cinderella] director Michael Shell, Steven Kemp (set designer) and Amanda Seymour (costumes) made of the whole Rossini jamboree. This is a new production which was built in Kansas City over the last 18 months, so it was particularly gratifying to see the synergy of local talent and artistic expression.

– Hilary Stroh, Bachtrack

I know we cannot always produce every aspect of our productions, but it is so wonderful to see a production completely done in KC! This was exceptionally beautiful and well designed, executed, directed, performed, etc! What a season opener. Thank you for the beautiful evening and for being a staple in our community.

Cinderella Attendee

I don't quite know how you are doing it, but the the Lyric Opera productions just keep getting better and better.

Madame Butterfly Attendee

Madame Butterfly was the first opera I saw at age five, and your production reminded of why I fell in love with the opera. The production was breath taking from beginning to end.

Madame Butterfly Attendee

[Porgy and Bess] does not romanticize Catfish Row. It reveals its fractures and its faith. And it does so through performances of remarkable technical excellence and emotional discipline.

– Andrew Burrill, Broadway World

The performance was phenomenal. It was so emotional and powerful. Timothee Chalamet doesn't know what he's missing!

Porgy and Bess Attendee

A great and inspiring program that taught about race and how we really aren't as different when we all dream.

Langston Hughes: A Lyrical Life Community Attendee

Keep up the amazing work! In a world that seems to want us to be numb and compliant, the Lyric reminds us that we are alive and that we can indeed, reach our hands and hearts into the past, present, and future. We can celebrate being alive! Bravo!

Langston Hughes: A Lyrical Life Attendee

One of the best operas I’ve ever been to—thank you for a powerful afternoon.

Of Mice and Men Attendee

Thank you for continuing to select operas which end up being thought-provoking and filled with beautiful music!

We began our season in fall 2025 with a successful run of our brand-new production of Rossini's Cinderella, meticulously crafted by artists in Kansas City. In spring 2026, Langston Hughes: A Lyrical Life debuted with performances in several schools and community spaces, presented in partnership with community organizations including the Black Archives of Mid-America, the Kansas City Public Library, the Mid-Continent Public Library, the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center, and schools on both sides of the state line. Ending our season, we presented a new co-production of Carlisle Floyd's Of Mice and Men, ending our spring of highlighting American artists.

During the 2025–26 season, we welcomed several new artists and creatives into the Lyric Opera fold. All hands were on deck this season, as local and visiting artists shone in their Lyric Opera debuts. Many of our principal artists, conductors, designers, and creative team members joined us for the first time this season, coming from all over the world to bring our stories to life.
This year, Lyric Opera brought programming to the Kansas City area with the help of our invaluable community partners. Whether it was helping us tell our stories, collaborating on programming, providing exciting venues, or helping us find a puppy to make their stage debut, these organizations helped to create invaluable experiences and deepen our connection with this season’s operas.
