Adam Smith's recent roles include Don José (Carmen), Rodolfo (La bohème), and Cavaradossi (Tosca). His 2023–2024 season begins with his role debut as Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana) at Lyric Opera of Kansas City conducted by Roberto Kalb. This is followed by his debut with Washington National Opera, where he sings Roméo (Roméo et Juliette) directed by Simon Godwin. Returning to the role of The Prince (Rusalka), Smith makes his house debut at Les Arts València in a production by Christof Loy. This season also includes his German debut singing Cavaradossi (Tosca) at Staatsoper Hamburg. Smith concludes his season with a return to the role Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) at San Diego Opera, marking his house debut.

Recent highlights include his debut at the La Monnaie / de Munt as both Luigi and Rinuccio in a new Tobias Krazer production of Puccini’s Il Trittico conducted by Alain Atinoglu. Further highlights include Florestan (Fidelio) at Glyndebourne, and his South American debut at Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo as Cavaradossi (Tosca), Cavaradossi (Tosca) with English National Opera, Don José (Carmen), Rodolfo (La bohème), Duca di Mantova (Rigoletto) with Scottish Opera, and the Prince (Rusalka). He debuted at Opéra national de Bordeaux and Greek National Opera as the title role in The Tales of Hoffman and, and Teatro Comunale di Bologna as Erik (Der Fliegender Holländer). Adam Smith has performed Boris (Káťa Kabanová) at the Opera national de Lyon, and Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) with Cincinnati Opera.

Adam Smith has worked with a distinguished list of conductors and directors including Calixto Bieito, Mariame Clément, Alexander Joel, Daniel Kramer, Cornelius Meister, Sir Jonathan Miller, Tomaš Netopil, Giacomo Sagripanti, and Alberto Zedda among many others.

Born in the United Kingdom, Smith began his musical studies with the violin at the age of four. He graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music with a degree in music, International Opera Course at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and a Master of Music with Distinction. From 2014-2017, Smith was a member of the Opera Antwerpen ensemble. In 2015, he won First Prize, Audience Prize, Critics’ Prize, and Best Tenor at the International Ferruccio Tagliavini Singing Competition, and Third Prize in the Ada Sari International Vocal Artistry Competition. In 2016, he was a finalist in the International Stanisław Moniuszko Vocal Competition.
