Angelos Samartzis recently performed as Werther with Jyske Opera in Denmark, as Faust with the Opera in Perm and the Tallinn National Opera, as Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut in Taiwan, and as Manrico in the new production of Il Trovatore with the Nuremberg State Opera.
In the 2017–18 season, Samartzis was a member of the Saarbrücken State Theatre’s ensemble, where he excelled in roles such as Rodolfo, Faust, Jason in Médée, Alfredo in La Traviata, Ismaele in Nabucco, Don Carlo, Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos, Calaf in Turandot, and Radamès in Aida.
In summer 2018, he made a strong impression as Don José in Carmen at the Braunschweig Festival and has since returned to Braunschweig in various roles. In 2017, he made his successful debut as Rodolfo with the Athens National Opera.
In the 2022–23 season, Samartzis debuted as Dick Johnson in La fanciulla del West at the Hagen Theatre and performed Froh in Das Rheingold and Don José in Carmen at the Saarbrücken State Opera.
In the 2019–20 season, he performed Ricardo in Un ballo in maschera for the first time at the Eutin Festival and reprised the role at the Halle Opera House. He also performed in an opera gala concert at the Bolshoi Theatre in Minsk. In summer 2018, he returned to the Braunschweig Festival as Don José in Carmen and performed as Rodolfo at the Braunschweig State Theatre in the 2018–19 season.
Samartzis studied singing and music at the Athens Conservatory and law at Athens University. He graduated in opera music from the Karlsruhe Music Conservatory under Stephan Kohlenberg and Julia Várady and completed a master’s degree at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin with Stephan Rügamer and Julia Várady.
He has attended master classes with Jane Henschel, Cheryl Studer, Robert Dean Smith, Marlis Petersen, Donald Litaker, David Jones, and Brian Zeger.
In 2007, Samartzis made his debut at the Greek National Opera as Ramiro in Rossini’s La Cenerentola. He has also performed roles such as Hoffmann in The Tales of Hoffmann (Offenbach), Giraffier in Les deux aveugles (Offenbach), Lacouf in Les mamelles de Tirésias (Poulenc), and Alwa and the Painter in a concert performance of Alban Berg’s Lulu. At the Rheinsberg Castle Chamber Orchestra Festival, he performed Cavaradossi in Tosca.
In 2016, he participated in the world premiere of the opera Das schwarze Wasser at the Neukölln Opera in Berlin and captivated audiences in the opera event The Spanish Night with Carmen – Zarzuela Show. In January 2017, he debuted as Narraboth in Salome at Theatre Nordhausen.
Samartzis frequently appears in concerts and opera galas with orchestras such as the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt, the Thüringen Philharmonic Orchestra Gotha, the Brandenburg Symphonic Orchestra, and the Polish State Philharmonic Orchestra in Częstochowa.
In 2024, he is scheduled to perform as Calaf in Turandot with Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and as a cover for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, on its tour with Maestro Antonio Pappano in Tokyo.
