And there you go, folks. Spring is here in Kansas City 🌷, and the final thrust of the season is upon us. There is so much exciting activity at Lyric Opera this spring: the annual Lyric Opera Ball 🥂, the community tour of Maya and the Magic Ring 🦄, and the fabulously epic ending of our season, Turandot 👑. In case you missed it, Lyric Opera's new season was announced—a long-anticipated return to four operas for our Kansas City community 🥳. Come be a part of opera magic and open your world!

Maya and the Magic ring

We are in the middle of our community tour of Maya and the Magic Ring—our brand-new opera for families. So far, we've performed the show eight times at four different venues! There are still three more chances to see this enchanting work by Lori Laitman and Dana Gioia in Kansas City on our community tour. ✨

Opera Dives Deep

Explore the genius behind the grandeur of Turandot with Opera Dives Deep, offering two chances to hear speaker Dr. Aaron Ziegel:

📅 April 21 at 7:00 pm: Learn the true, dramatic story of the score of Turandot, which was incomplete after Puccini's death in 1924, and later finished by Franco Alfano. 📖

📅 April 28 at 7:00 pm: Explore the sound world of Turandot, including Puccini's compositional idiom, his engagement with the styles of his modernist contemporaries, and his search for sonic inspiration in the then unknown and largely inaccessible world of Chinese music. 🎶

Puccini's Turandot

The 2024–2025 season is wrapping up with Puccini's masterwork, Turandot. With a star-studded principal cast, over sixty chorus singers, and the full might of the Kansas City Symphony, this production is like nothing else in the operatic canon. Don't miss this operatic spectacle, May 2–4 at the Kauffman Center!

Opera is a Family Affair

Producing an opera is a massive, collaborative effort that involves more than 700 people each year. It truly takes a village—and sometimes a family—to make an opera come alive. Opera has even become a full-circle experience for Steven and his family:

My mom Nancy and I couldn’t be more excited to be supernumeraries together in Turandot! It’s our first time on stage as mother and son, and to do it at the Kauffman Center makes it extra special. My first time attending an opera in Kansas City was in 2021—the same year my husband Neal joined Lyric Opera’s staff—so now it’s really a family affair! We love all that Lyric Opera offers on the mainstage, in schools, and in our beloved community.
