JOIN US FOR A FREE PERFORMANCE OF SKETCHBOOK FOR OLLIE!

Lyric Opera is partnering with Shawnee Mission Unitarian Universalist Church to offer a free community performance of the newly commissioned educational touring opera Sketchbook for Ollie. The opera tells the story of 8.5-year-old Ollie who is questioning the meaning of life after the death of his grandmother. It is a day spent with his Aunt Leeza, a composer, that gives him some tools and a path to understanding life’s ups and downs. After the performance, age-specific discussion groups will be held to explore the opera’s central theme of grief. Ages 6 and above are invited and encouraged to attend (and grown-ups too!); RSVP here.

Community Conversations

Violetta, the central character of La traviata, is afflicted with tuberculosis. Over the course of three acts spanning several months in the story, we see her grow in relationship and decline in health. In the arms of her lover and with one of her last breaths, she sings, “You will be light and breath to me, and the future will smile on us.” Even at her weakest, Violetta remains hopeful. In today’s world, we could all use a deep breath and a little bit of hope. Join us for a celebration of life and breathwork in Kansas City. RSVP here.
