Mexican soprano Yunuet Laguna is a recent graduate of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera and winner of the Elizabeth Connell Prize International Competition. In 2024, she returned to the role of Aida in her debut with the Immling Festival. She also made her role debut as Leonora in La forza del destino in a co-production with Opéra National de Montpellier and Opéra de Toulon, and made her role and house debut as Elisabeth in Don Carlos with Theater Kiel.
Last season, she joined Opéra National de Montpellier in concert for their Grand Gala Lyrique and returned to the Metropolitan Opera for its production of Carmen. She recently made her role debut as Aida with Teatro del Bicentenario; returned to the role of Micaëla in Carmen in her debut with Des Moines Metro Opera; joined the Montevideo Escena Vocal Festival in recital; and was selected to represent Mexico in the 2022 Operalia Competition. Laguna also recently made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly; joined Opera Theatre of Saint Louis as Micaëla in Carmen; and sang Mimì in La bohème in her debut with the Municipal de Santiago, Opera Nacional de Chile.
Laguna was a Filene Artist at Wolf Trap Opera in the summers of 2020 and 2021, where she made her debut as Mimì in Puccini’s La bohème, Maguelonne in Viardot’s Cendrillon, and Jeannette in Bologne’s L’Amant anonyme. In September 2019, she debuted with the Houston Symphony Orchestra in a program of Spanish zarzuelas during Hispanic Heritage Month. In January 2020, she made her debut with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Xian Zhang.
She has received multiple honors, including first place in the 2019 Opera Index Competition and the 2020 Hildegard Behrens Foundation Prize. She is the first Mexican soprano in history to participate in the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Laguna won the inaugural Metropolitan Opera National Council (MONC) Mexico District auditions in San Miguel and earned second place in the MONC Gulf Coast Region auditions in 2019. That same year, she was a finalist in the Sinaloa International Vocal Competition, where she received a scholarship to attend the San Miguel de Allende Bel Canto Institute. In February 2019, she won the Ana María Martínez Encouragement Award at the Houston Grand Opera Concert of Arias competition.
