Matthew J. Schulz is committed to fostering inclusivity, community, and integrity within his artistic pursuits. He strongly believes that the world of opera and the musical stage are essential to our development as a society and our understanding of the human condition. Schulz holds a Masters and Doctorate in Opera Directing from the University of Texas at Austin’s Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music. Schulz is a protege of Italian-American director Robert DeSimone, and is an IDC-accredited level 2 intimacy director. Dr. Schulz trained at the prestigious San Francisco Opera’s Merola Opera Program, and was awarded a 2023 Directing Fellowship at Wolf Trap Opera. Schulz has served on the staging staff at Austin Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, North Carolina Opera, Opera Colorado, Opera Omaha, and Utah Opera.
