March is for mariachi in Kansas City! The second half of the 2024–2025 season starts on Friday with Cruzar la Cara de la Luna 🌙 and with our first-ever Lyric Opera Afters, the official Lyric after party. All Friday night ticket holders are invited to celebrate and vibe with the cast and creatives. 🪩 As we move through March and get closer to spring, don't miss our third family opera commission, Maya and the Magic Ring, set to start its community tour in late March. ✨ Looking forward to April, we have the annual Lyric Opera Ball, and the season ends with Puccini's grandest opera, Turandot. 👑

Finally, stay tuned to Lyric's channels as we announce the 2025–2026 season this weekend! We can't say what the shows are yet, but how about a little emoji game?!

CRUZAR LA CARA DE LA LUNA

This weekend, we open our third opera of the season—Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, the world’s first mariachi opera. By blending the deeply rooted tradition of mariachi with the expressive power of opera, this groundbreaking work tells a moving story of home and family in a way that feels both personal and universal. Want to learn more about how mariachi and opera come together? Check out our blog to explore the significance of both styles before you see them unite on stage this weekend!

Lyric Opera Afters

After opening night of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, join us for Lyric Opera Afters: the official Lyric Opera afterparty! Head to the Lyric's Production Arts Building to mingle with the cast and creative team, savor delicious bites from Taco Naco KC, and enjoy a vibrant performance by Grupo Folklorico Alma Tapatía. This is a free event for all who attended the Friday evening performance of Cruzar—just bring your Friday night ticket or playbill for entry.

Doors open at 9:00 pm. Space is limited in the Production Arts Building, so be sure to RSVP early!

Maya and the Magic Ring

Who wouldn’t want to see an opera with a genie, a talking cat, and a unicorn? 🦄 Join Lyric Opera of Kansas City for Maya and the Magic Ring, a new opera for the young and the young at heart (yes, adults, that includes you too!). Enjoy eight performances of this heartwarming story from March 29 to April 12 in community spaces across Kansas City, with both free and ticketed performances available. 🎭

Becoming a REdwood

Join us for Becoming a Redwood: The Songs of Lori Laitman and Dana Gioia on Sunday, March 23, at 4:00 pm at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. 🎶 This free recital celebrates the extraordinary collaboration between composer Lori Laitman and poet Dana Gioia, showcasing their remarkable artistic partnership. The program includes a world premiere song written for the occasion and concludes with a conversation and Q&A with Laitman and Gioia. 🌟 Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the emotional depth and beauty of their work, performed by Lyric Opera's Resident Artists. 🎹

Turandot

To conclude the 2024–2025 Lyric Opera season, we are presenting Puccini's final opera, Turandot. The cast for this production will be nothing short of epic, featuring the debuts of Wendy Bryn Harmer as Princess Turandot and Brittany Olivia Logan as Liu. Double-cast in the role of Calaf, singing one of opera’s most iconic arias, “Nessun dorma,” we are excited to welcome back tenor Diego Torre (previously seen as Canio in our 2023 production of Cavalleria rusticana | Pagliacci) and to introduce tenor Angelos Samartzis in his Lyric Opera debut.

Narrative Storytelling Workshop

In February, Lyric Opera's Learning Department and Resident Artists led a workshop on the theme of “home” for middle and high school choir and theater students, sharing songs in English, Spanish, and Korean. 🎤 Students explored figurative language by writing their own poems, sharing heartfelt reflections like, “Home tastes like my grandma’s seafood boil,” and, “Home sounds like singing with my choir teacher.” Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools vocal music teacher Sydney Williams praised the experience, saying, “My students were blown away… the overall theme of ‘home' was brilliant, and helped students connect the dots of deeper meaning… they sat and listened in awe, and I know they were positively impacted.” ❤️
